Indefinite Duty

Indefinite duty assignments are assignments or jobs away truck driver your original tax home that are not considered to be a temporary assignment.  When a taxpayer is on an assignment that is considered indefinite, the location of the assignment or job now becomes the trucker's new tax home.

An assignment or job in a single location is considered indefinite if it is realistically expected to last for more than one year; whether or not it actually lasts for more than one year. A trucker's related travel expenses are only deductible when that truck driver travels away from his or her tax home and that travel involves an approved rest period.

For the purpose of getting a larger per diem deduction, if you have to work from a new base of operation, it is much better to have that assignment last for less than 1 year and be considered temporary.

Other related duty definitions include a temporary assignment and an itinerant.
