Transportation Workers

Transportation Workers are workers in the transportation industry whose work:

  • Directly involves moving people or goods by airplane, barge, bus, ship, train, or truck.

  • Regularly requires the employee to travel away from home and during any single trip.

  • Usually involves travel to areas eligible for different standard meal allowance rates.

Truckers qualify for the tax write-offs associated with working as a transportation worker.  Specifically, truck drivers qualify for a higher meal expense allowance than the general public does.  The higher meal allowance for transportation workers is described and calculated on IRS Form 2106.  Additionally, IRS Publication 463 lists the tax rules for transportation workers.  Transportation workers who fall under DOT rules, such as truck drivers, are eligible to use the special rate for transportation workers if they so wish.
